When dealing with homeless or indigent people, there are specific problems that many of these people experience and it is good to know ahead of time, a little bit about these struggles.
A big problem for people who are homeless is addictions. Many are alcoholics, but even more are probably on drugs. Drugs and alcohol can alter thinking abilities, which makes it even more challenging in helping these people.
We really need the power of God with us as we work with the homeless, should God be leading us to them. Some people are homeless temporarily, due to a job loss. But others seem to be stuck there. And they seem to want to stay there. Why?
Drug addiction is very powerful. It is a stronghold in a person's life. If we minister to a drug addict, if he or she wants to repent, we will help them and pray for them. But remember that getting off drugs is not something they can turn on or off at will. If a person is on heroin, they need to detox. But there is a serious price to pay for detoxing. It is excruciating and a very difficult process to go through. A detoxing person needs someone with them during this period. They will be tempted to go back and try to find the drug, even though they will have to hurt others in the process.
These people need to hear the Gospel. God will work in their hearts and if they are willing, God will enable the process for them to become totally free from drugs. But it's not something that's going to happen overnight. It will require a lot of prayer on our parts and praying against the Powers of Darkness who would keep their grips on the addict until set free.
The addict who comes to Christ also needs the power of the Holy Spirit to help him or her to be free. Only God's power can deliver people from the chains of addiction to drugs. Be patient, loving, and prayerful when working with drug addicts who want to come to Christ and be free. God is able to help and we need to call upon His name.
